2008 Hilo Workshop: “In the Hands of God”

By Evan Bartholomew, Lead Minister.

“Listen to Me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the Lord called Me; from My birth He has made mention of My name. He made My mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of His hand He hid Me; He made Me into a polished arrow and concealed Me in His quiver. He said to Me, ‘You are My servant, Israel, in whom I will display My splendor.’ But I said, ‘I had labored to no purpose; I have spent My strength in vain for nothing. Yet what is due Me is in the Lord’s hand, and My reward is with My God.’” Isaiah 49:1-4 (NIV).

Here in Isaiah, the prophet speaks of a great “Redeemer and Holy One of Israel” (Isaiah 49:7) who would not only “restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel”, but would also be a “light for the Gentiles, that [the Redeemer] may bring [God’s] salvation to the ends of the earth.” (Isaiah 49:6) We have come to know this great Redeemer to be found in Jesus Christ, who’s message of salvation is still being spread to the “ends of the earth” through His true and faithful followers! This includes even the most remote of places of the world, like the “islands!”

Upon returning to the islands from the 2008 World Missions Jubilee in LA, it has been awesome to see the work that God has done in Hilo in these last three weeks! There have been three baptized and one very special brother placing membership with the church! Though it is exciting to see God move through people’s hearts, it has never been more obvious to me than now that there is much more work to be done in order to reach the rest of the islands – the rest of the world. There is SO much work, that we can sometimes feel that we “have labored to no purpose”, but as the Redeemer says, “what is due Me is in the Lord’s hand, and My reward is with My God.”

The theme for this year’s summer workshop is In The Hands Of God! As Jesus placed His life in God’s hands when He quoted Psalm 31, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit” (Luke 23:46) during His very last breaths on the cross, we also have to place ourselves “in the hands of God” as we die to ourselves and carry our sharpened sword of salvation to the ends of the earth. The three main classes that will be taught at the workshop are “Financial Sacrifice that Carries the Church,” “Powerful Praise that Grabs the Soul,” and “Dynamic Bible Talks that Reach the Lost!”

Keahi (middle) basks in the sun just after her baptism two Sundays ago!

We are pleased to have three awesome guest speakers from the Honolulu International Christian Church: Kyle and Joan Bartholomew (Evangelist and Women’s Ministry Leader for the Honolulu Church), and Jodi Tyrell (Bible Talk Leader for the Honolulu Church). The Workshop will be an awesome time to regroup from the long summer vacation and rededicate ourselves to God and His mission! It will be held at Evan and Kelly Bartholomew’s house in Hawaii Paradise Park for Friday’s and Saturday’s sessions (August 22-23), and then at the YWCA on Sunday (August 24). There will be a free lunch on Saturday, and a potluck barbecue on Saturday night. Also, child care will be provided throughout the Workshop!

Please bring your family and friends and join our Hilo family for an incredible time in God’s Word! Let us be prepared to place ourselves In The Hands Of God as we strive to fulfill His great calling! To Him be the glory!
