Family Devos Week 3: Show Respect

FamilyDevo03Family Focus: Show Respect.

Godly Goal: To be able to demonstrate what showing respect should look like.

Scripture of the Week: “But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests.” Luke 14:10 (pdf)

Song Suggestions: 387 How Great Thou Art; 466 I Will Speak; 601 Lord, God Almighty; 910 Jesus Loves the Little Children; 919 Praise Him, Praise Him.

Daily Discussion:

  • Day 1: Where are some places that you don’t like to be? What does it feel like when someone makes you feel special?
  • Day 2: What does the word “respect” mean? How does our scripture relate to respect?
  • Day 3: Who are some people that you showed respect to today? Describe a time when you felt like a “king” or “queen.”
  • Day 4: What does the word “disrespect” mean? What are some examples of disrespect that we can show?
  • Day 5: What are some respectful jobs that people can have? When we respect someone, what does that look like?
  • Day 6: Who are some people you want to show extra-special respect the next few days? How have you been doing in showing respect to others?
  • Day 7: Who makes you feel special? How do you know Jesus was a great example of showing respect to others?

Prayer Focus: Pray for a heart that wants to respect other people.

Ways to Build:

  • Read Luke 14:7-11. Discuss why Jesus told this parable.
  • Role play being a guest at a party. First pretend to be a guest who takes the best seat but is told to sit elsewhere, then pretend to be a guest who takes the worst seat but is told to sit in the best seat.
  • Talk about who some authority figures are around us, and how to show respect to them.
  • Every day this week, take turns sitting in different seats at the dinner table, or performing different roles in the family.
