Family Devos Week 7: The Heart

FamilyDevo07Family Focus: The Heart.

Godly Goal: To understand that God cares about what’s inside of a person’s heart.

Scripture of the Week: “But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'” 1 Samuel 16:7 (pdf).

Song Suggestions: 440 Sanctuary; 458 Glory, Glory, Hallelujah!; 903 Deep Down in My Heart; 912 I’ve Got the Joy, Joy, Joy.

Daily Discussion:

  • Day 1: How tall are you? What is our heart for?
  • Day 2: What kind of clothes do you like to wear? What does it mean to have “heart”?
  • Day 3: What do we do to look good in our appearance when we get ready in the morning? What does God mean when he says he looks at the heart?
  • Day 4: What are some parts of your appearance you’d like to change? Why doesn’t God care about our outward appearance?
  • Day 5: What are some of your strengths? Why do people care about their appearance so much?
  • Day 6: What are some of your weaknesses? What would you do if someone made fun of your appearance?
  • Day 7: What are some of the strengths of our family? Why should you feel good about yourself?

Prayer Focus: Pray for God to bless you with a good heart and inner strength.

Ways to Build:

  • Read 1 Samuel 16:1-13. Discuss why God wanted David to be king, and how he had humble beginnings.
  • Discuss why calling people names or teasing is not a good thing to do.
  • Come up with ways to handle being teased.
  • Tell each other some of the strengths that family members have.
