Family Devos Week 10: Watch Your Language

FamilyDevo10Family Focus: Watch Your Language.

Godly Goal: To understand that our speech comes from what’s inside our hearts.

Scripture of the Week: “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Luke 6:45 (pdf).

Daily Discussion:

  • Day 1: What is the heart? What does Jesus mean by “the mouth speaks what the heart is full of?”
  • Day 2: What are some objects that are used to store things? How can our words hurt others?
  • Day 3: What are good things that our heart can contain? Why do people say bad words or hurtful things?
  • Day 4: What are bad things that our heart can contain? Why are the words we say to others so powerful?
  • Day 5: What can we use our mouth for? How can our words be used to impact others in a positive way?
  • Day 6: What are some good things that we can say? What can you do to increase the chances that good words come out of your mouth?
  • Day 7: What are some good things that others have said to you this past week? How does good communication between you and another person help both of your hearts?

Prayer Focus: Pray for God to help you speak with good words.

Ways to Build:

  • Read Luke 6: 43-45. Discuss the analogy of how a good tree only bears good fruit.
  • Role-play what would happen if an apple tree started producing lemons instead of apples.
  • Have members of the family talk about how their words have hurt other members of the family.
  • Make a “good word” jar, where you put a note or coin inside of a container every time someone in the family says something good to someone else.
